Useful keyboard shortcuts in Windows 8

With the release of Windows 8 Release Preview, many users will certainly want to try the new operating system on their computers. At the same time, it would not be an exaggeration to say that the vast majority will not be able to experience the convenience of touch control, which is given close attention in this OS due to Microsoft’s plans to enter the tablet market with a desktop version of Windows. In addition, Metro’s fundamentally different approach to user interface philosophy and rather poor optimization for mouse control may at first confuse any traditional PC user.

In this regard, it becomes necessary to familiarize yourself with keyboard shortcuts that allow you to speed up your work with Windows 8 by quickly performing individual actions and commands to avoid long transitions and movements. Some of these keyboard shortcuts migrated from Windows 7, others were introduced for the first time.

Lock screen

Locked screen image preceding password entry (this feature can be disabled, but not in Windows 8 RP) can be removed by clicking or pressing the spacebar. In contrast, to instantly lock the screen, you need to press the Windows key + L key combination. Thus, the control of the lock screen can be carried out completely using the keyboard.

It should be noted that custom language switching settings, as in Windows 7, do not apply to the lock screen. Instead, Alt + Shift and the new Windows + Space are used to provide a visual language selection.

Closing Metro programs

The mechanism for closing Metro programs is not entirely clear, because there is no familiar button in the upper right corner. There are also no other visual and natural ways. Closing a running application using the mouse is possible only through the left panel, and even then only after switching to another program. In this case, the good old Alt + F4 will be useful.

Calling old Start menu commands

The absence of the Start menu causes the problem of accessing familiar commands and functions like Control Panel, Windows Explorer (Windows + E), Computer Management, Search, Startup (Windows + R), Desktop (Windows + D), Command Prompt and others. Some of them can be called using the right mouse button when hovering to the lower left corner of the screen in the desktop interface, or simply by pressing Windows + X.

It seems that all users will have to memorize the combination Windows + E, since there is no easier way to launch Windows Explorer. By the way, the Task Manager can be opened using the keyboard shortcut Ctrl + Shift + Esc, which can be done, perhaps, with only two hands.

Left and right panels

You can use the keyboard shortcuts Windows + C and Windows + Tab to open the two new Windows interface panels without using the mouse (now there is no previous full-screen scrolling of programs in 3D).

All Programs Screen

Using the right pane is quite cumbersome. Therefore, to call up a screen with a list of all installed programs and a search field, it is much more convenient to use the combination Windows + Q. To call a search among the OS settings, you can use a pair of Windows + W.

Properties panel and context menu

On the Start screen, to configure shortcuts, you need to press the right mouse button, and to call – the left. When operating with the keyboard, Space and Enter are used for this purpose, as well as the arrows.

In the Metro screen, the context menu of programs is invoked by right-clicking on an empty field – for this you can also resort to the Windows + Z key combination.

Desktop

The button that was present in Windows 7 in the lower right corner of the screen still exists and you can click on it to hide windows, the same command can be called by the Windows + D combination, and to minimize windows – using Windows + M. If you just need to look at the desktop, then now you have to use the Windows + “,” combination – simply hovering the mouse to the lower right corner will not give the expected result.

Screen merging

You can merge screens by grabbing the top field of Metro apps or the desktop, or by using the Windows + “.”.

Calling up the sharing panel

Commands related to sharing access are collected in the menu group called from the right panel. To do this, you can also use the combination Windows + H.
