Exynos M1 SoC confirmed with Samsung’s own CPU
24.04.2021 [23:41],
Anton Testov

It’s no secret that Samsung Electronics is developing its own 64-bit general-purpose processor cores. This month, the company’s first CPU core received support from several software development tools, which may indicate that Samsung has begun testing the first system on a chip with a processor of its own design.

The latest versions of GNU Binutils (a set of tools) as well as the GNU Compiler Collection (compilers for various programming languages) released this month add support for the latest ARM processor cores, including all the latest ARM Cortex (A17, A72, M7), and also proprietary developments of company partners such as Applied Micro X-Gene 1, Cavium ThunderX and Samsung Exynos M1 (formerly known as Mongoose). While the level of support is quite low, for example, developers are encouraged to use ARM Cortex-A57 software scheduling for the M1, but a start has already been made.

Samsung Exynos: universal processors for Samsung devices

Although rumors about Samsung’s plans to introduce its own general-purpose computing cores have been circulating for a long time, the application for support of these cores with third-party tools is the first official confirmation of the project. In addition, the addition of support means that new Exynos M1-based systems-on-chip (SoC) already exist in silicon and are currently undergoing internal Samsung Electronics review.

Since optimizing software for modern microprocessors is critical for high performance, adding support for Exynos M1 cores in Binutils and GCC is an important step for Samsung. It’s possible that Samsung’s closest software partners already have access to the new SoC.

Samsung Exynos 7 – Samsung’s first 14nm chip

Traditionally, developers receive the first samples of their microprocessors 9-12 months before the start of mass production. If Samsung plans to use an Exynos M1-based processor for its next-generation flagship smartphone – the Samsung Galaxy S7 – it’s no surprise that the company is already testing samples of new chips. Traditionally, Exynos chips are used not only in smartphones, but also in tablets, TVs, Blu-ray players and other types of Samsung products.

Unfortunately, very little is known about the Exynos M1 processor core. Today, two things are clear: it is a 64-bit core compatible with the ARMv8-A architecture, which was completely developed by Samsung, taking into account the company’s requirements for future devices and microprocessors. Samsung is a founding member of the heterogenerous system architecture foundation (HSA), so it is highly likely that the company’s future SoCs will be HSA 1 compliant.0. So new Samsung chips will be able to use GPUs for general purpose tasks, saving energy and increasing performance. Fortunately, since third-party programmers will soon have access to the Exynos M1-based SoC, we have every chance to learn some details about Samsung’s new general-purpose cores in the coming months.

According to recently released information, Samsung began working on its own implementation of the processor based on the ARMv8 architecture in 2021. Since then, the company has recruited many microprocessor design and engineering professionals, including former employees of companies like Advanced Micro Devices.
