Exynos M1 SoC confirmed with Samsung’s own CPU
It’s no secret that Samsung Electronics is developing its own 64-bit general-purpose processor cores. This month, the company’s first CPU core received support from several software development tools, which may indicate that Samsung has begun testing the first system on a chip with a processor of its own design.
The latest versions of GNU Binutils (a set of tools) as well as the GNU Compiler Collection (compilers for various programming languages) released this month add support for the latest ARM processor cores, including all the latest ARM Cortex (A17, A72, M7), and also proprietary developments of company partners such as Applied Micro X-Gene 1, Cavium ThunderX and Samsung Exynos M1 (formerly known as Mongoose). While the level of support is quite low, for example, developers are encouraged to use ARM Cortex-A57 software scheduling for the M1, but a start has already been made.
Samsung Exynos: universal processors for Samsung devices
Although rumors about Samsung’s plans to introduce its own general-purpose computing cores have been circulating for a long time, the application for support of these cores with third-party tools is the first official confirmation of the project. In addition, the addition of support means that new Exynos M1-based systems-on-chip (SoC) already exist in silicon and are currently undergoing internal Samsung Electronics review.
Since optimizing software for modern microprocessors is critical for high performance, adding support for Exynos M1 cores in Binutils and GCC is an important step for Samsung. It’s possible that Samsung’s closest software partners already have access to the new SoC.
