Tens of thousands of stars of the ancient globular cluster M55 in new images
eleven.05.2021 [12:33],
Ivan Terekhov

Astronomers at the European Southern Observatory (ESO), using the VISTA infrared telescope, obtained even more detailed images of the densely populated globular cluster M55, which was first discovered in the middle of the 18th century by the French astronomer Nicolas Louis de Lacaille and then included in the famous astronomical catalog Charles Messier at number 55. The cluster is removed from us by about 17 thousand. light-years and is located in the constellation Sagittarius. Its dimensions do not exceed 100 light years, which is extremely small with such a density of “population”.

The new “family portrait” contains tens of thousands of stars, which are interesting to science not only due to their high density of distribution, but also because they are among the oldest in the Universe. Observations of globular star clusters show that they formed at about the same time – more than 10 billion years ago – from the same gas cloud.

Since the era of cluster formation is only a few billion years away from the moment of the Big Bang, almost all the gas then present was the simplest, lightest and most abundant in space – hydrogen, with a small addition of helium and even much smaller amounts of heavier chemical elements such as oxygen and nitrogen.

The fact that they are composed primarily of hydrogen distinguishes the inhabitants of globular clusters from stars born in later eras, such as our Sun, which lit up about 4.6 billion years ago.

About 160 globular clusters have been found around our Galaxy, located generally symmetrically with respect to the galactic center. There may be thousands of such clusters around the largest galaxies. Their study helps scientists to elucidate the mechanisms of the origin and development of galaxies, as well as study the stages of the life path of stars.
