Computex 2021: Ubuntu for smartphones and TVs
An unusual demo could be seen at Computex 2021 at the Ubuntu booth, which consisted of several Europeans in orange T-shirts and a pair of TVs. One of the TVs was connected to a Motorola smartphone installed in a docking station.
If you take the smartphone out of the dock, it will remain just an ordinary Android smartphone. However, if you insert it back, then after a few seconds the Ubuntu desktop appears on the TV screen connected to it. The system can be controlled either using a touch screen, if the TV has one, or by using a keyboard and mouse connected to the dock. On the TV, you can check emails through Thunderbird, surf the Internet with Mozilla, watch videos from Youtube, and even work in Open Office.
Another TV just hung on the wall, nothing was connected to it. However, since it belonged to the Samsung Smart TV family, it had an ARM processor installed. Now you can install a special version of Ubuntu for TVs on any TV with an ARM processor. However, Ubuntu is not quite full-fledged here, but stripped-down – only multimedia functions are available. You can watch videos, listen to music, flip through pictures and photos, even a video from Youtube or Netflix (only not in Russia) – but you can’t check your mail, you can’t access the Internet. Ubuntu employees from the booth explained this by the fact that the TV is usually in the living room, where the whole family gathers. And the family is not interested in your mail. The TV is controlled either from its “native” remote control, or from Wii Remote-shaped controllers, Microsoft Kinect or USB keyboard and mouse.
This version of Ubuntu can be installed on any device with an ARM or x86 processor, on which you can even install at least something. That is, for example, on media players, computers a la Raspberry Pi and other similar gadgets. Also, programmers from Ubuntu made an SDK for the TV version, so in the near future there will be applications for it.
