AMD Trinity 32nm Chips Announced: Targeting the Mobile Sector
Long-awaited second generation AMD 32nm APUs announced. Trinity chips replace 32nm Llano solutions in the market, offering Piledriver CPU cores, improved graphics with VLIW4 architecture (used in the Radeon HD 6900) and a new UVD block from Radeon 7000 accelerators. Despite the same process technology, the company’s engineers have done an excellent job of improving energy efficiency and productivity. Most of the details have already been revealed thanks to preliminary announcements and detailed rumors, but now the first 5 mobile chips are officially presented.
Trinity processors, like Llano, are manufactured in compliance with 32nm process technology at GlobalFoundries facilities. The crystal area reaches 246 sq. mm (against 228 sq. mm for Llano), and the number of transistors is 1303 million (versus 1450 million for Llano). AMD lowers standby power consumption to 1.08W, which should have a positive impact on laptop battery life.
Instead of the old cores with the K10 architecture, the new processors received Bulldozer CPU blocks (more precisely, the second generation of the architecture named Piledriver). Among the new instruction sets, FMA3 is supported (its support is expected in 2021 Intel Haswell processors, interestingly Bulldozer supports FMA4). In addition, Piledriver has reworked command allocation, branch prediction, and prefetching blocks relative to Bulldozer, and increased the number of commands executed per clock cycle. Energy efficiency is also noticeably improved. In order to save die area in Trinity, as in Llano, there is no L3 cache. But there is a third-generation Turbo Core automatic overclocking technology.
Graphically, Trinity relies on the proven VLIW4 architecture at the heart of the Radeon 6900 cards, instead of the more modern Graphics Core Next in AMD Southern Islands accelerators. Compared to Llano graphics, performance is improved by about 1.5 times in chips with comparable power consumption. Of course, you shouldn’t expect miracles from the built-in GPU, but the Trinity owner will be able to run almost all modern games with certain quality settings at an acceptable frame rate. Do not forget about the possibility of pairing with discrete AMD graphics.
In addition to improved graphics and a completely new CPU architecture, UVD blocks for hardware video decoding, taken from the Radeon 7000, were also reworked. Trinity now has the ability to accelerate decoding of two HD video streams, support Blu-ray 3D (MVC) and MPEG-4 DivX. The ability to output to three screens at the same time is available.
So far, the company has introduced mobile chips with power consumption of 17, 25 and 35 W, but then desktop chips with TDP of 65 W and 100 W are promised, depending on the model. All presented mobile products are very different. 35-watt models are presented:
- flagship A10-4600M with two Piledriver modules (4 cores) clocked at 2.3 GHz (up to 3.2 GHz in Turbo Core mode) and equipped with 4 MB L2 cache, Radeon HD 7660G graphics with 384 stream processors with a frequency 497 MHz (up to 686 MHz in Turbo Core mode);
- mid-model A8-4500M with two Piledriver modules (4 cores) clocked at 2.1 GHz (up to 2.8 GHz in Turbo Core mode) and equipped with 4 MB L2 cache, Radeon HD 7640G graphics with 256 stream processors with 497 MHz (up to 655 MHz in Turbo Core mode);
- and the entry-level A6-4400M with just one Piledriver module (2 cores), clocked at 2.7 GHz (up to 3.2 GHz in Turbo Core mode) and equipped with 1 MB L2 cache, as well as halved Radeon graphics HD 7520G with 192 Stream Processors @ 497 MHz (up to 686 MHz in Turbo Core mode).
Chips for thin laptops (in Intel’s terminology – ultrabooks) are divided into two very interesting solutions:
- 25W flagship A10-4655M chip with 4 cores @ 2 GHz (2.8 – Turbo), 4 MB cache, Radeon HD 7620G graphics (384 stream processors up to 360 MHz nominal and Turbo frequency – 424 MHz);
- 17W Model A6-4455M with 2 Cores @ 2.1GHz (2.6GHz Turbo), 2MB Cache, Radeon HD 7500G Graphics (256 Stream Processors up to 327MHz Nominal Turbo frequency – up to 424 MHz).
Until recently, AMD had only Brazos platform chips equipped with very mediocre graphics and greatly simplified Bobcat cores among the hybrid processors with power consumption up to 20 W. Now the company is going to compete with Intel in the production of thin, but at the same time powerful enough and attractively priced laptops. At the same time, as AMD promises, the performance of the 17-W A6-4455M is about the same as the 35-W Llano, that is, the efficiency has approximately doubled:
The advantage of Trinity chips is that their integrated graphics can work in conjunction with discrete AMD accelerators. The following combinations are supported with entry-level Radeon HD 7000M accelerators:
Changed the company and the logos of its products, which were previously rumored. Instead of red, they turned silver, and there were sticker options to distinguish thin, stylish or powerful laptops.
The following table gives some insight into how the company is positioning its mobile chips against Intel solutions. The new A10 processors sit between the Core-i5 and Core i7 lines and should form the basis of laptops under $ 700. The rest of the solutions will be used in cheaper mobile systems.
Overall AMD has done a great job. I would like to hope that this time, thanks to the debugging of the 32-nm technical process, the company will be able to quickly establish mass shipments of chips and avoid a shortage. The first thin notebooks based on Trinity chips have already been announced. It remains to wait for them in retail.
