Samsung adds FreeSync support to multiple 4K TVs

Samsung Releases Firmware Updates That Add FreeSync Over HDMI Support To Its Range Of 4K TVs. FreeSync is a variable refresh rate technology that allows for smoother gaming while avoiding screen tearing on AMD Radeon graphics cards. A slightly different implementation of FreeSync has been available for some time now on the Xbox One, One S and One X consoles.

Currently, it is reported that the technology has appeared in the following Samsung TV models for the American market: Q6FN, Q7FN, Q8FN, Q9FN QLED, as well as NU8000 (apparently, European counterparts will also receive new firmware). This is a great step for fans of console games who have received a highly demanded feature, which was previously exclusive to PC monitors.

It is necessary, however, to point out a couple of compromises. Support is provided only at 1080p and some aspects of screen brightness may be affected. This means PC and Xbox One X users will need to lower the resolution of their systems’ output on Samsung TVs, trading in image quality for FreeSync support. However, for Xbox One and One S users, this option does not bode well – after all, these systems display a picture in games no higher than 1080p.

In addition, it is worth noting that only in some games Eurogamer tests showed the quality of FreeSync at the PC level, and in most cases Microsoft’s implementation does not completely remove screen tearing. However, a lot also depends on the support for different frequencies of the display – what opportunities Samsung TVs can provide is not yet clear.

These are the first steps of FreeSync in the console market, so it’s logical to assume problems – of course, I would like to see TVs with support for 4K resolution technology over time. I would also like to hope that other manufacturers will implement FreeSync in their TVs. By the way, it seems that while NVIDIA is not going to support TVs with variable frame rate in GeForce video cards, while remaining faithful to its own proprietary G-Sync technology.
