Once again on AMD Zen architecture in relation to Opteron
More recently, we published a note on some of the architectural features of future AMD processors, which will use the new microarchitecture, codenamed “Zen”. And now there is new information on the World Wide Web regarding Opteron server chips based on this architecture. According to foreign sources, the previously mentioned 32-core AMD Opteron will use multi-chip technology (Multi Chip Module, MCM), that is, several crystals will be placed on a common substrate at once, in this case – four. Accordingly, each of the crystals will have 8 Zen cores. Nevertheless, the base unit in the new architecture will be a four-core Zen assembly with a shared L3 cache of 8 MB.

This is clearly seen in the diagram. As we already know, each core will have six integer pipelines, two 256-bit floating point computations and have a L2 cache of 512 KB. Each crystal of the future 32-core AMD Opteron will receive two basic Zen assemblies and will be equipped with a dual-channel memory controller, and each channel will support two DIMM slots, the maximum number of slots for memory modules will be 16. But this is in theory, but in practice, the new Opteron will have an eight-channel DDR4 memory interface. With a maximum volume of 256 GB per channel, the total maximum amount of RAM can reach an impressive 2 terabytes. Additional space on the die in 32-core Opterons will be obtained by abandoning the integrated graphics core of Greenland.

Each die will also receive two combo 8- and 16-bit links, which can be xGMI, PCIe, SATA / SATA-e, 10Gbase-KR, and SGMII.
