MIT researchers have developed Vital-Radio, a device that monitors breathing and heartbeat without physical contact with the human body. Vital-Radio works correctly even when there are several people in the room at once. Moreover, it measures the data of all of them at once. The inventors created a prototype of the device and tested it on a group of fourteen people. After more than two hundred experiments, it was found that Vital-Radio can work at a distance of up to eight meters, and even through walls. The accuracy of determining the respiration rate reaches 99.3%, and for the heartbeat this indicator is 98.5% (experimental data when the user was at a distance of 1 meter from the device). At a distance of 8 meters, the accuracy drops to 98.7% and 98.3%, respectively. In a room with an area of 8 × 5 m, Vital-Radio is able to read indicators of three people at once. In this case, the same accuracy was achieved as with measurements with one person.
