Unusual galaxy from the constellation Centaurus reveals its secrets
New image from the European Southern Observatory (ESO) shows the unusual galaxy Centaurus A. With a total exposure of more than 50 hours, the resulting image became the deepest available image of this strange and picturesque object. Image captured by the Wide Field Imager at the 2.2-meter MPG / ESO telescope at La Silla Observatory in Chile.
Centaurus A (NGC 5128) is a massive elliptical galaxy with a supermassive black hole at its center. It is located about 12 million light-years from us in the southern constellation Centaurus and is notable for being the most visible radio galaxy in the sky. Astronomers believe that the bright core, strong radio emission and jets in Centaurus A are associated with the presence in the center of a black hole with a mass of 100 million times the mass of the Sun. The substance of the dense central parts of the galaxy, falling into a black hole, produces a huge amount of energy.
The dark region surrounding the galactic center contains a large amount of gas, dust and young stars. Bright young star clusters at the upper right and lower left edges of the stripe are marked by the reddish glow of star-forming hydrogen clouds, and isolated dust clouds loom against the background of the stars. These details, along with strong radio emissions, provide strong evidence for the suggestion that Centaurus A is the result of a merger of two galaxies. The dust lane is likely a deformed remnant of a spiral galaxy being torn apart by the powerful gravitational pull of a giant elliptical galaxy.
New series of images captured with WFI includes long exposures in red, green and blue filters, as well as filters specially designed to isolate hydrogen and oxygen emissions. Centaurus A is widely studied in the range from radio waves to gamma rays. To understand the nature of the interaction of radiation from a supermassive central black hole with the surrounding regions, observations in the radio and X-ray ranges were especially important. Scientists from the European Southern Observatory will soon start exploring Centaurus A using the ALMA telescope array under construction.
The information obtained during the observations was used to find out whether it is possible, using surveys carried out by ground-based telescopes, to register and study variable stars in galaxies that, like Centaurus A, lie outside the local group of galaxies. As a result, more than 200 new variable stars have been discovered in Centaurus A.
