NVIDIA surprised the audience by introducing the largest graphics accelerator in history, codenamed GK110, initially as part of Tesla’s solution for the server market, rather than as a consumer GeForce graphics card. The GK110 is at the heart of the NVIDIA Tesla K20 HPC stream processor, which is detailed by NVIDIA in a press release. In this case, we are interested in the semiconductor monster that underlies it.

For starters, NVIDIA claims the GK110 uses an incredible 7.1 billion transistors, double the GK104! At the same time, the chip retains its internal hierarchy. The main building blocks are streaming multiprocessors (SMX) with 192 CUDA cores each. It is likely that the GK110 die contains 16 such SMX blocks. We can say with a high degree of confidence that in the GK110 the performance of general-purpose calculations is not reduced, as in the GK104, but is at the normal level for a flagship. Earlier rumors indicated that the GK110 crystal area is 550 sq. mm, which is 87% more than that of the GK104 – judging by the characteristics, this is quite realistic.

NVIDIA Says Tesla K20 Offers 320GB / s Bandwidth. This is an interesting figure, because it gives an idea of ​​the memory interface of the chip. Considering the fact that today’s fastest GDDR5 memory chips operate at an effective frequency of 6 GHz, NVIDIA could only achieve 288 GB / s throughput if the memory interface was 384-bit. Considering the fact that GPU manufacturers usually set slightly lower frequencies for the memory of computational accelerators, it is likely that the GK110 is equipped with a 512-bit memory interface. Assuming that, NVIDIA can achieve 320GB / s throughput with memory clocked at 1250MHz (5GHz effective).

The launch of the GK110 as a Tesla accelerator raises a legitimate question: will this chip ever form the basis of a gaming accelerator?? So far, NVIDIA has launched it in a relatively small-circulation market, which at the same time brings significant revenues. The company does not need to worry about meeting widespread demand. In addition, NVIDIA has already unveiled the GeForce GTX 690 accelerator with a cost of over $ 1000 – much more at the moment? Perhaps over time, when the 28-nm process technology is debugged, the company will decide to introduce such an accelerator to the consumer market, but in the near future it is unlikely that GK104 will give up the role of the flagship in this sector.
