Sony unveils NEX-F3 and A37 cameras
With leaks already known a lot about Sony’s latest system and DSLR cameras, it’s time to officially launch this highly anticipated duo. The NEX-F3 replaces the highly popular entry-level NEX-C3 system camera, while the A37 will take the same position as an entry-level member of the Alpha family.
Along with the camera announcement, Sony promised to launch new lenses in July: 18-200mm f / 3.5-6.3 for the E-mount for $ 850 in the US, and 18-135mm f / 3.5-5.6 for A-mount for $ 500. Both the NEX-F3 and A37 will hit the market in June with an 18-55mm lens and a MSRP of $ 600 in the US – very attractive value and well positioned against the competition.
The NEX-F3, as noted, replaces the C3 in the entry-level NEX range. The new device differs from the old one in a number of significant improvements. For starters, it should be noted that it comes in three colors (black, white and silver), and the handle attracts attention, which now looks like something in between similar elements in the NEX-5 and NEX-7.
This means that the shutter button is now located on the top of the grip rather than on the top of the camera, which significantly improves usability. Journalists note that it has become much easier to hold the camera in your hands, and even more so to use the two-position shutter / focus button. The on / off switch remains on the top cover and has been redesigned.
Other design changes include round metal keys, a built-in flash, a loop that allows you to rotate the screen 180 degrees and take self-portraits – this opportunity should be appreciated by people who want to leave their photo as a souvenir. Unfortunately, the display can no longer rotate downward, making it difficult to shoot in an overhead position.
In addition to changes in the exterior, the F3 received a new 16.1-megapixel sensor, thanks to which the maximum ISO sensitivity was increased from 12,800 to 16,000. The camera is capable of shooting video in 1920×1080 resolution at 60fps in interlaced mode or 24fps in progressive mode, while the C3 could only shoot in resolutions up to 720p. Supports continuous photography at 5.5 fps.
Unlike the C3, the new NEX camera is compatible with an external Sony OLED viewfinder, and comes with a built-in 1.5A USB charger instead of an external battery charger (now sold separately). Unfortunately, the camera becomes unusable while charging. However, C3 owners can use the old charger – the battery is the same. It is also worth noting that, according to Sony, the F3 is much more efficient at using battery life – it can take 470 shots on a single charge versus 400 for the C3.
Owners of any other NEX system camera will not have to get used to the new device – the user interface is almost identical. The NEX-F3 has learned a number of new features. For example, the Auto Portrait Framing mode has appeared, which automatically crops portrait photographs so that the resulting composition meets the rule of thirds, and then stretches the image to full resolution using the Sony By Pixel Super Resolution technology (the technology completes the drawing when stretching the details using a special Sony base ).
Journalists point out that the F3 can achieve very good results, and the new Sony 18-200mm lens is very useful for getting closer to distant objects. However, the resulting images do not differ fundamentally from the C3, so if the photographer does not need 1080p video and is able to crop portraits himself, it is hardly worth updating. But when it comes to buying a new device to replace the digital compact, the F3 will not disappoint.
Meanwhile, the A37 complements Sony’s lineup of modern SLR cameras, the A77, A65 and A57. As in the case of the NEX-F3, the camera received a 16.1-megapixel APS-C sensor with a sensitivity range of ISO 100-16000 ISO (lower limit F3 – ISO 200). The camera also shoots 1920×1080 60i and 24p video and is capable of continuous snapshots at 7fps at 8MP or 5.5fps at full size.
As with other Alpha cameras, it uses translucent mirror technology, which, combined with phase detection technology that predicts object movements, allows for smooth focusing when shooting video. The camera also features subject tracking technology and a 15-point autofocus system available in the A65, along with automatic portrait cropping as mentioned above.
The camera grips very well in the hands and, despite the light weight, the body feels very solid. Fingers grip well due to textured surface. The sliding 2.7-inch LCD screen is also very convenient. Overall, the A37 is a solid choice for those looking to get their first DSLR. It costs $ 100 less than the Nikon D3200 and $ 50 more than the Canon EOS-1100D, but compared to the latter, the buyer gets a higher resolution sensor with a larger ISO range and some other advantages. Of course, the main factor of choice is the quality of the images – here the A37 and F3 are okay for their price level.
