Valve is working on a game movie, but not one that fans dream of
Various initiatives have been taken over the years to bridge the gap between cinematography and video games. Now Valve, one of the legendary companies in the gaming industry that knows how to tell exciting stories in their projects (the proof is the games of the Half-Life or Portal series), decided to try their hand in this area at a new level. The company, which is known for its games, not making films (although Valve has already produced special animated videos for Team Fortress or Portal), decided to participate in the highly intriguing Deep project, which will be a completely new experience for it, if not for the industry as a whole.
The launch of Project Deep, which takes place in an underwater post-apocalyptic future on a land filled with various mutated creatures, was announced during the Annecy International Animated Film Festival (France). Directed by Shane Acker, best known for his short (and later full-length) cartoon Nine, which also takes place in the post-apocalyptic future.
Shane Ecker, director of the movie Deep (Moviepilot)
The story takes place after the third world war in the underwater world on the wreckage of Western civilization in the not so distant future, when the remnants of humanity literally “lay low” to stay alive. The story revolves around the crew of the nuclear submarine Norwood, and their attempts to uncover the secrets of the mysterious small organization Wayfarers, whose goal is to completely eradicate humanity.

Most interestingly, the Deep team works closely with Valve, which provides it with tools and technologies based on the Source game engine. Tools allow flexible cinematography and editing processes, simplify animation work, and efficiently perform lighting, sound, and visual effects calculations. Render times can be largely ignored, allowing creators to quickly revisit individual scenes or improve animations – resulting in tremendous savings in time and money over traditional film production. Such tools are extremely important, because the budget of the tape is only 19 million, which by the standards of modern Hollywood is a penny for an animated film.
Originally conceived as a comic novel, Deep will be released as a full-length tape. But the creators decided to resort to the Source engine for a reason – the characters and the environment of the animation tape can be easily transferred to the game. The team has already started work on a game level that will be distributed through the online distribution platform Steam, and then plans to expand game content, and also wants to allow users to create their own levels in the Deep universe.
“Deep offers an immersion in a sci-fi world, but at the same time the story is built on the complex motivation of characters who are forced to make difficult choices between good and evil. I am delighted to be part of a team that is rethinking how storytelling in general and animation in particular can be, ”said Mr Ecker.
Whether the film will hit theaters is not clear yet, but it will almost certainly appear on Steam – the creators want to use new distribution methods and platforms. So far, nothing is known about the completion time of work on the project. A short video was recently released that sheds some light on the film.
It seems that fans of Half-Life will have to forget about the release of the third part of the game for some time, but maybe it will appear in the future along with the film.
