Google Signs Worldwide With French Publishers And Book Authors
fourteen.06.2021 [05:25],
Vladimir Mironenko

A long-term legal battle between Google and French publishers and authors of books has come to an end, accompanied by numerous allegations of copyright infringement.

Google has announced an agreement with organizations representing the interests of French publishers and authors that will keep them in control of the commercial use of their books, and a wide audience of readers will have access to digital versions of long-unpublished second-hand books.

Philippe Colombet, head of Google Books France, said the Syndicat National de l’Edition, representing some 600 publishers, and the Société des Gens de Lettres (France) withdrew their claims against the search giant.

Colombe claims that about 75% of books are no longer reprinted and access to them is very limited. In order to provide wide access to such literature, Google has digitized millions of books, but for about six years, instead of publishing them on the Internet, it spent time on litigation with publishers and authors.

The signed agreement states that Google will sponsor the Young Reading Champions Program and support the Publishing Laboratory to help new businesses and traditional partners experience the benefits of digital technology.
