You can disrupt the operation of the HDD with the sound of ordinary speakers
Security researchers from the University of Michigan USA and Zhejiang University of China have published an article on acoustic attacks that can lead to failures of hard disk mechanics and, as a result, damage to both hardware and software. The attack does not require special equipment: an attacker can use ordinary built-in speakers or connected speakers to cause permanent errors on the target system.
“Our experiments have shown that audible sound causes the Head Stack Assembly (HSA) to vibrate harder than normal operating conditions allow; and the ultrasonic noise causes false alarms of the shock sensor, which is designed to prevent head failure. The problem identified could pose great challenges for magnetic hard drives, which remain highly prevalent in security-critical areas such as medical devices and other actively used systems, ”the researchers said in their paper.
As the study explains, modern mechanical hard drives use sensor-based forward controllers to adjust the position of the hard drive head. Using ultrasonic vibrations, an intruder can cause false alarms, leading to the parking of the head. Beeps can also vibrate the read and write head, resulting in poor positioning over the magnetic surface and operating outside of normal parameters. The hard drive will not function as intended by the manufacturer, which can damage both the drive itself and the files stored on it.
“An attacker can attack a hard drive by causing vibration through acoustic emitters built into the victim’s system (or closest to it)… The more powerful or physically closer the sound emitter is to the target storage device, the more likely the attack will be successful, ”the study says.
The success of such attacks also depends on the frequency characteristics of the built-in speakers: the study reports that not all speakers are able to reproduce the frequencies necessary to disrupt the operation of the HDD. But many laptops with good built-in acoustics may well fall victim to this type of attack.
While it seems that home consumers shouldn’t worry too much about the problem. However, businesses and government agencies can heed the warnings from researchers and consider the possibility of these new types of attacks.
