AMD reveals details on Zen processor speed

Advanced Micro Devices on Wednesday confirmed that next year’s microprocessors will be based on the latest Zen microarchitecture. The company has pledged significant performance improvements over existing chips, and said its engineers are already working on an improved version of Zen technology, an architecture called Zen+.

Mark Papermaster, CTO at AMD, told financial analysts that Zen cores will execute 40% more instructions per clock (IPC) than Excavator cores. Essentially, this means next-gen AMD CPUs will be 40% faster than their predecessors with the same core count and clock rate. According to AMD, Zen +-based chips will deliver even more impressive performance per clock, which means further major improvements at the microarchitectural level.

The Excavator cores are the pinnacle of the Bulldozer microarchitecture, which promised a revolution in the field of building multi-core processors in 2021-2021, but failed to become a worthy competitor to the modern microarchitectures of Intel corporation. One of the reasons for the actual Bulldozer fiasco is considered to be the “modular” design of processor cores (informally called clustered multi-thread (CMT) by analogy with the clustered integer-core, developed by DEC in 1996 for the Alpha 21264 RISC processor. Since each dual-core Bulldozer module includes two blocks of execution of integer operations (with accompanying logic), but one block of execution of floating point operations (and also divides an instruction fetch block, an instruction decoder, and a second-level cache between integer cores), in the case with floating point operations, it behaves like a not very efficient single-core chip.

Zen microarchitecture promises to be the opposite of Bulldozer. Each Zen core will include six integer execution units, two 256-bit floating point execution units, its own instruction decoder, an instruction fetch unit, a branch prediction unit, its own cache memory, etc.d.

In addition, like Intel processors (starting with Pentium 4), new AMD processors will support simultaneous multithreading (SMT) technology. The use of SMT will allow new kernels to execute instructions from several independent threads on different functional modules of the Zen kernel in one clock cycle, thereby increasing peak performance.

According to AMD, the Zen microarchitecture will have an inclusive multi-level cache subsystem, sharpened for the lowest latency and maximum bandwidth. The replacement of an exclusive subsystem of the cache memory (each level stores unique information) to an inclusive one (large caches of lower levels can store copies of the contents of smaller caches of the upper level) is actually happening for the first time in the history of AMD processors. Since the K6 chip, the company has adopted an exclusively exclusive cache hierarchy.

A 40% increase in instruction execution per clock compared to Excavator does not mean Zen-based processors will be 40% faster than existing AMD FX or A10 chips. Since the new chips can run at higher clock speeds, it is possible that they will be significantly faster than current AMD APUs and CPUs. On the contrary, if the clock speeds of the new products are low, the new AMD products will be able to show only a moderate increase in performance compared to today’s solutions.

As expected, Zen microprocessors such as the Summit Ridge, Bristol Ridge and Basilisk will be manufactured using 14nm fin-shaped field effect transistor (FinFET) technology at GlobalFoundries. It is expected that the most advanced version of the 14nm technical process – 14LPP (14nm low-power plus) will be used for the manufacture of new chips.

Considering the extremely slow development of processor microarchitectures in recent years, the 40% increase in performance per clock cycle is impressive. Nevertheless, much will depend not only on the microarchitecture itself, but also on the practical implementation of the processors, as well as their clock frequencies. With a favorable set of circumstances for AMD, it is very possible that future FX processors will be able to compete with the most powerful Intel Core i7 chips in the second half of next year.
