AMD uses 20nm process technology for only one of its processor
07.05.2021 [17:15],
Anton Testov

Late last year, Advanced Micro Devices officially announced that it will use Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co’s 20nm process technology. for the production of some microcircuits. Apparently, in addition to highly integrated processors for game consoles, the company uses this technology for only one of its own chip.

In March last year, the company officially announced that 20nm technology will be used to create products related to the Skybridge project, systems on the Amur chip (based on ARM Cortex-A57 cores) and Nolan (based on x86 Puma + cores). In addition, it is known that the company plans to use 20nm technological norms to manufacture a low-cost version of the system on a chip for the Microsoft Xbox One game console. There is a possibility that the company will also use 20nm technology to create a hybrid processor for the Sony PlayStation 4.

AMD Skybridge: systems on a chip on ARM or x86

The first information about the Amur and Nolan processors appeared around 2021-2021. Then it was believed that these microcircuits should receive two or four general-purpose computing cores (x86 or ARMv8 architecture), a new Radeon graphics core based on GCN 1 architecture.1 or 1.2, full compatibility with heterogeneous system architecture HSA 1.0, as well as a number of other innovations.

As technology evolved and plans were revised, AMD removed heterogeneous computing support from Amur and Nolan (as well as Beema and Mullins) and improved Radeon graphics cores based on the advanced GCN architecture. In recent months, AMD has removed Nolan itself from its product list, judging by AMD’s latest future plans. Thus, the only system-on-a-chip that will be sold under the AMD brand and manufactured using TSMC’s 20-nm process technology (CLN20SOC) will be Amur (up to four ARM Cortex-A57 cores, AMD Radeon based on GCN, consumption in the region of 2 W).

AMD’s roadmap for mobile microprocessors. Slide from the Planet3DNow forum.

TSMC’s 20nm process was developed for low-power mobile systems on chips for smartphones and tablets. It is currently used by Apple, Qualcomm, NVIDIA, MediaTek and some other clients of the world’s largest contract semiconductor manufacturer. Probably, the libraries of elements for CLN20SOC are missing a number of blocks, which makes it unsuitable for somewhat complex microcircuits with non-standard x86 cores. In addition, a number of features make this technological process not the best choice, even for economical graphics chips. On the other hand, it is great for ARM cores and mobile systems on a chip for which it was designed.

Since the AMD Amur-based system has not been announced at the moment, it is likely that the company will announce it at Computex along with Carrizo-L. Thus, devices based on Amur will hit the market no earlier than the end of the third – beginning of the fourth quarters of this year. Since there is currently no specific data on Amur, it is not possible to judge the competitiveness of the solution.
