Perytons, radio telescope and microwave: Australian scientists discover the source of mysterious signals 17 years later

Dmitry Prikhodko

Sometimes scientists, trying to find a complex scientific justification for a particular physical phenomenon that arose during experimental research and experiments, may not notice simple things. As a result, the answer to the question of interest turns out to be much simpler and much more trivial than originally assumed. In the case of Australian specialists, who took as long as 17 years to uncover the source of the mysterious signals, such a practice has every chance of becoming a household name due to the curiosity and comicity of the situation.

It will be about Australian astronomers who recorded interference of unknown origin back in 1998 while working with a radio telescope at Parks Observatory. The mystery of the nature of the arisen interference confused scientists and took 17 years to explain the reason for their occurrence. It all began with the fact that Simon Johnston – head of the department of astrophysics at the National Science Agency CSIRO – discovered signals, hereinafter referred to as “perytons”. Later it was found that these signals were local in nature – their source was located at a distance of no more than 5 km from the telescope.

The first theories put forward by experts indicated that the cause of the interference that arose several times a year was atmospheric phenomena, which, perhaps, had a direct relationship with lightning discharges.

This year, astronomers placed a receiver in their observatory for registering extraneous signals at a frequency of 2.4 GHz, indicating its presence on the radio. Testing a microwave oven available to scientists, which could theoretically become the source of those very “perytons”, did not give positive results. But as soon as one of the employees opened the microwave door before the heating process was completed, the device immediately generated mysterious interference that affected the radio telescope.

The mystery of the “Perytons”, which some even claimed to be cosmic before the distance to a potential source of interference was established, has officially been revealed. Used to warm up lunches by several staff on duty at the observatory, a conventional microwave oven has “fooled” leading Australian astrophysicists for 17 years. The inconsistency of the signals was due to the fact that interference arose only when the telescope was directed towards the microwave, and one of the workers in the kitchen opened its door.
