Nobel Prize in Physics in 2021 awarded to black hole researchers
Black holes – mysterious space objects beyond which even the light of stars cannot escape – this year brought scientists the Nobel Prize in physics. Two scientists received their share of the prize for practical observations, and one for the theoretical substantiation of the formation of black holes.
Roger Penrose received half of the prize, which this year was increased to SEK 10 million (roughly $ 1.12 million). Penrose, who may celebrate his 90th birthday next year, wrote a paper back in 1965 with a rigorous mathematical substantiation of the physics of black hole formation.
He proved that the formation of black holes directly follows from the general theory of relativity of Albert Einstein. This process is based on the gravitational collapse of dying stars, which creates a singularity in the center of the black hole, where the laws of physics known to us cease to operate.
The second half of the award was shared by two practitioners – astronomers Reinhard Genzel and Andrea Ghez. Each of them in the 90s of the last century led his own group of astronomers, which explored some invisible and compact supermassive object in the center of the Milky Way.
Having developed unique methods of observation and analysis, the group of Reinhard Gentzel from the Max Planck Institute for Extraterrestrial Physics and the group of Andrea Gaz from the University of California at Los Angeles independently concluded that there is a supermassive black hole in the center of our galaxy. All stars near this object changed the trajectories of their orbits. It was possible to calculate that in this place of the Milky Way in space no more than our solar system, up to four million solar masses are concentrated. The calculations and conclusions of both groups coincided with high accuracy.

Note that this year, due to the coronavirus pandemic, the Nobel Prize laureates are being awarded in absentia. Traditionally this event took place in November. By the way, it can be assumed that next year the Nobel Prize in Medicine will be awarded for the invention of a vaccine against the coronavirus COVID-19 or important research related to it. But that is another story.
