Nissan will equip all vehicles with Active Driver Assistance by 2024
New car models of most major auto concerns have already begun to be equipped with second-level active driver assistance systems: they can independently move in traffic jams, keep within the lane and brake in front of obstacles. By 2024, Nissan will equip all cars coming off the assembly line with similar capabilities.

As reported by Nikkei Asian Review, Nissan Motor has decided to release more than 20 new models by April 2024, which will be equipped with the proprietary ProPilot version 2 system.0 or 1.0, depending on the price category. In the first case, cars will be able to move along suburban roads with minimal driver intervention, in the second, such a driving mode will be available only if there is a vehicle in front, to which the car can “virtually tether”.
Therefore, by the end of fiscal 2023, Nissan intends to equip all new vehicles coming off the assembly line with Active Driver Assistance systems. The first generation ProPilot system debuted back in 2021, Nissan relies on the element base of Mobileye, the Israeli division of Intel, which during its independence helped Tesla to create the first generation autopilot system.
With ProPilot 2.0 is equipped with the Skyline sports car presented in the fall of last year, and the electric car Ariya, which will be released next year, will also receive it. Active Driver Assistance Systems will be offered by Nissan in geographic markets where road infrastructure and legislation are ready. According to the SAE classification, the driver assistance systems in Nissan vehicles do not exceed the second level. This means that automatic functions work only in stable conditions, a sudden change in them may require human intervention.

The goal of this initiative is Nissan’s goal of expanding the vehicle fleet, through which the company can collect and analyze data on traffic situations. At the same time, the effect of cost savings on the scale of production is achieved. Rival Toyota Motor already offers “advanced cruise control” for 60-70% of cars sold in the Japanese market. The Lexus LS flagship sedan will debut at the end of the year, which will offer as an additional paid option a system that allows the driver to remove their hands from the steering wheel while driving.
Experts predict that by 2030, autonomous control functions of the first level and higher will be provided in 80% of cars sold on the market. However, even by that time, the majority of vehicles will receive a degree of autonomy not higher than the second level according to the SAE classification.
