The French reported a revolution in lithium batteries, but asked to wait another year
The economy and you and I need more advanced storage power supplies. Such spheres as individual electric transport, “green” energy, wearable electronics and much more are pushing for this. Like everything in high demand, promising batteries are becoming the subject of speculation, which gives rise to numerous promises, among which it is difficult to find real pearls. So the French pulled themselves up. Will they be able to?
French supercapacitor and battery company Nawa Technologies has announced a new carbon nanotube electrode for batteries that allows manufacturers to create traction batteries with much better performance. The company promises to increase the battery capacity tenfold, the specific energy capacity up to three times, the life cycle up to five times and reduce the charging time to minutes instead of hours.
These claims are driving a battery revolution. And this is all the more interesting because the developer promises to provide a ready-made technology for the production of batteries according to his recipe in about 12 months.
So what do the French offer?. And they propose to abandon the traditional technology for the production of battery electrodes (anodes and cathodes). Today electrodes are made from a mixture of powders dissolved in water or in special solvents. The mixture is applied to foil and then dried. This technology is fraught with significant heterogeneity of the composition of the working material of the electrodes and, over time, leads to its degradation. Nawa proposes to abandon powders and solutions and grow carbon nanotubes on foil as a base (sponge) for an active material (lithium).

The technology proposed by the company allows growing up to 100 billion carbon nanotubes on each cm2 of foil. Moreover, the Nawa technology makes it possible to grow strictly vertically oriented nanotubes (perpendicular to the base), which shortens the path of lithium ions from one electrode to another by tens of times. This means that the material of the electrodes is able to pump a much greater power of electric current through itself, and the ordered structure of identically oriented nanotubes will save space inside and the weight of the entire battery, which will result in an increase in the capacity of the batteries.
Also, since electrodes account for up to 25% of the cost of modern batteries, the production of Nawa promises to make them cheaper. The technology of the future production is such that the tubes will be grown on foil one meter wide by a roll (rolling) method. Interestingly, this technology was developed by the company for the production of a new generation of branded supercapacitors, but it also promises to be used in the production of lithium batteries.
