The US military is thinking about creating self-driving off-road vehicles
Modern autonomous car platforms perform well in a predictable (habitable) environment, but in off-road conditions the algorithms fail. Fast change of environment and chaos around does not allow autonomous cars to move as fast as if the vehicle was driven by a human. US military proposes to change the situation, where the DARPA RACER program should help.
The DARPA Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) initiated the launch of the four-year program Robotic Autonomy in Complex Environments with Resiliency (RACER). The abbreviation RACER (in Russian for a racer) stands for the autonomy of robots in complex environments with fault tolerance. As part of the program, it is planned to create a testing ground for unmanned vehicles with new driving algorithms and the algorithms themselves, although tests will be carried out in all corners of the country.
During the test, it is supposed to squeeze out literally all the juices from the existing sensors and orientation methods – to select all the limits that limit modern sensory systems. But the main focus will be on software. “To achieve RACER’s goals of speed and resilience, we need to use learning approaches that automatically tune system parameters in real time,” said Stuart Young, program manager who leads the RACER project. “Successful software will extract functions from sensor data and use that information to make driving decisions on the ground.”.
