LTE from the stratosphere: a glider with a base station on board was able to provide cellular coverage from an altitude of 19 km

HAPSMobile and Alphabet Loon introduced the world’s first LTE connectivity from a stand-alone mono-wing glider during a recent test flight, when their drone was also able to reach the stratosphere for the first time. The team even had a video call over an LTE connection.

HAPSMobile Sunglider solar-powered drone flew over 19 km with Loon LTE base station on board. He was able to provide a connection using MIMO technology, transmitting an LTE signal for 15 of 20 hours of flight. SoftBank Corp. CTO and HAPSMobile CEO Junichi Miyakawa said:

“I am delighted that our wireless communications equipment, co-developed with Loon, has exceeded expectations in the harsh altitude environment. This test provides important data that will accelerate the development of commercial services and improve the reach and quality of our HAPS connections. We will continue to develop wireless products with Loon to revolutionize mobile communications and bridge the digital divide across the world. “.

Test flight used 5 MHz band from 700 MHz spectrum to provide reliable connections for both outdoor and indoor use, as confirmed by 4-way videoconferencing. This call allowed members of the Loon and AeroVironment teams to use smartphones across the ocean – participants were in New Mexico, Tokyo, Mountain View (California) and Washington (DC).

Loon CEO Alastair Westgarth said: “This successful test represents another step towards the development of a new level of communication that works in the stratosphere. This is also an important step in our ongoing strategic partnership with HAPSMobile. By developing technologies to harness the power of the stratosphere, we are making progress towards our common goal of connecting disconnected or loosely connected groups of people around the world. “.

This flight was also used to measure the propagation of radio waves between the stratosphere and the earth, which will be used to further develop radio communications in the stratosphere in the hope of creating a standardized set of rules for the world to follow. Both companies will now work with other partners, carriers and regulators on future test flights.
