Oppo wants to become the third largest smartphone maker in Europe, replacing Huawei

Oppo is ranked second in China’s smartphone market and fifth globally, but in Europe it expects to squeeze into third in the next three years. Next year the company plans to increase its share in the European market from 3 to 5%, the further goal is to overcome the milestone of 10-15%. Oppo promotes 5G models through European carriers.

Oppo VP Alex Wu shares the company’s plans in an interview with Nikkei Asian Review. The brand has been present on the European market for a little over two years, during the year it managed to increase its share from 1 to 3% in Western Europe, in Eastern Europe the dynamics were slightly less convincing. By 2023, the company aims to cover at least 10-15% of the European market. According to Counterpoint Research, Samsung currently dominates the local market with a 35% market share, followed by Apple with 17% of the market and Huawei third. Oppo will have to fight for third place with Xiaomi, which also expects to use sanctions against Huawei to strengthen its own position in Europe.

Oppo signed an agreement with Deutsche Telekom this week that will allow the telecom operator to sell 5G-enabled Reno 4 smartphones in Germany, the Netherlands and Poland. Oppo will continue to launch mid-range 4G smartphones for the local market as 5G is expanding much slower in the region than in China, Japan or South Korea. Affected by the pandemic and sanctions against Huawei, which slow down the deployment of new generation networks in Europe.

According to Alex Wu, next year up to 80% of all smartphones sold in China will support 5G networks. Oppo’s shipments are expected to grow 38% next year, based on DigiTimes Research forecasts. Oppo manufactures more than 80% of its smartphones in-house, with factories in various countries, including Indonesia, Bangladesh and India. The global smartphone market, according to analysts, will grow by 12% next year.
