Russian scientists received a patent for the manufacture of electrodes for lithium batteries without cobalt
The use of cobalt-free lithium batteries in electrodes promises to expand rapidly. For example, Elon Musk announced the future transfer of mass electric vehicles to batteries with electrodes made of lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4). This is a relatively inexpensive compound, but not without its drawbacks, in particular, limiting charge and discharge currents, which leads to a reduction in cycles, power and charge rate. But Skoltech scientists will help with this.

“Scientists from the Skoltech Center for Energy Technologies have registered a patent that describes a method of creating a highly efficient conductive coating for electrode materials of a metal-ion battery by carbonization of polyacrylonitrile (PAN). The coating has unique characteristics: a high degree of graphitization, uniformity and uniformity of deposition, nanoscale thickness (less than 5 nm), which can significantly increase the electronic conductivity of electrode materials and the number of charge / discharge cycles, especially at high rates of charge / discharge “.
Lithium iron phosphate LiFePO4 is extremely interesting for manufacturers of lithium batteries for electric vehicles, as it brings with it low production costs, availability, safety and reliability in operation. At the same time, this compound has a key problem, namely, it is characterized by low electronic conductivity. This significantly reduces the electrochemical and operational characteristics at high charge / discharge current densities.
It is possible to improve the electrical conductivity of the surface of electrodes (anodes and cathodes) by applying an electrically conductive layer. This is usually done in this way: carbon-containing substances are burned in a neutral atmosphere. But there is a difficulty in this – it is difficult to achieve uniform deposition of pyrolysis products on the surface of the electrodes.
The invention of Russian scientists was “the creation of an economically attractive uniform conductive carbon coating of controlled thickness on the surface of particles of electrode materials”. The discovery will lead to the emergence of high-power and high-energy-consuming metal-ion batteries in Russia. And since the technology is available for licensing, it could appear in many places around the world and make batteries even better.
