Imagination unveils new GPUs for smartphones, autopilots and servers: up to 6 teraflops and massive scalability
Amazingly, the company Imagination Technologies began to gush with new developments, as soon as Apple broke off relations with it. Almost a year ago, Imagination unveiled the “Series A” GPUs, which became “the company’s largest development in 15 years.”. Today it goes even further and introduces “Series B” GPUs with even more impressive performance. And this is not all new items. The new year will be even more amazing.
The severance of engineering and licensing relations with Apple took Imagination out of the notorious “comfort zone” so much that it almost gave up. Chinese investors saved Imagination from bankruptcy, for which they received a lot of unpleasant hours of communication with government commissions of the UK authorities of various levels. Nevertheless, Imagination continued to develop new GPUs and does not lose hope for support from manufacturers (and even claims to conclude licensing agreements for new cores, although it refuses to name names).
But back to the new cores. Overall, the new development promises to lower power consumption while achieving higher levels of performance than any other licensed GPU on the market. Specifically, the most powerful solution delivers compute performance of up to 6 teraflops with up to 30% less consumption and 25% less footprint than previous generations of the company’s GPUs, and up to 2.5x faster fill rate (the speed at which a GPU can give out pixels) than competing cores.
B-series kernels should not be considered as top-down solutions after A-series kernels. This is a step forward, not down. B-Series GPUs represent a further evolution of the graphics architecture, delivering the highest performance per mm2 for the GPU and offering new configurations for lower power consumption. Plus, new GPUs boast up to 35% less interface bandwidth for a given performance. Together, the innovations position the Series B cores as solutions for projects of the highest level of productivity.
But servers and data centers are not the only interest for B-Series cores. Depending on the class and configuration, and there can be as many as 33 such configurations for the four main core versions (BXE, BXM, BXT and BXS, see below), “Series B” GPUs will be registered in smartphones from entry-level to flagship, in consumer electronics , in the Internet of Things, in microcontrollers, in automotive electronics and even in a PC.
Scaling approach is also unique to Imagination B-series kernels. The company is said to have adopted a “decentralized approach” for this. Cores can be designed and manufactured in the form of chiplets (independent pieces of silicon), which will allow both to summarize the performance of cores for solving one problem, and to load them with individual tasks (applications).

So, what are “B-Series” GPUs:

- IMG BXM: High-performance cores that provide the optimal balance of fill rate and compute speed in a compact design for mid-range mobile gaming and sophisticated user interfaces for DTV and other markets.
- IMG BXT: Incredibly high performance cores for real-world applications, scalable from wearable electronics to data centers. The flagship B-Series GPU is a quad-core component delivering 6 teraflops, 192 gigapixels per second and 24 TOPS for AI, delivering the industry’s highest performance per mm2.
- IMG BXS: These are GPUs with ISO 26262 (Automotive Platform Security Requirements) support, making them the most advanced automotive GPU IP cores ever made. Available as a full range from entry-level to premium, offering solutions for next-generation HMI, UI display, infotainment, digital cockpit, surround view, up to teraflops performance-oriented configurations for autopilots and systems driver assistance.
