People don’t belong here: a program for the development of unmanned warships has started in the United States
For life, war and work, a person needs an environment adapted to him. Drones do not require cabins or familiar human-sized controls. At the same time, autonomous platform designers continue to use certain elements of the “human heritage” in the construction and design of unmanned vehicles. New US military program aims to break with this and find the perfect solution for future autonomous ships without crew.

The DARPA NOMARS (No Manning Required Ship) program or “Unmanned ship” pursues two opposite objectives, each of which will be achieved within the program by different designers. Some companies will be responsible for the development of the appearance and skeleton of ships without crews, while others should provide the project with developments that would simplify as much as possible the maintenance, repair and provision of autonomous ships in port and at sea in a combat situation. On the one hand, there should be no room for a person on an autonomous ship at all, and on the other, access to its units should be the easiest.
As planned by the military, if there are no people on the ships at all, then a lot of space for equipment will be freed up. Moreover, the outlines of unmanned warships can take on fantastic shapes. Participants in this phase of research should make the most of the factor of the absence of a person on board and benefit not only in forms (low sides, minimization of air-filled spaces, and so on), but also in materials used to build ships.
The above area will be handled by Autonomous Surface Vehicles, LLC, Gibbs & Cox and Serco.
Two other companies – Barnstorm Research Corporation and TDI Technologies – will design new architectures for self-adaptive ship health management (SAHM), which will be important for long-term autonomous operation of ships on the high seas. InMar Technologies and Siemens Corporation will, respectively, design cases for new requirements and optimize designs for new materials.
It is expected that at the first stage of development, the NOMARS program will create a clearer understanding of the design principles of unmanned combat surface ships. In the next stages of the program, prototypes of the best concepts will be built, and the culmination of development is the X-ship framework, which can be used for demonstrations, tests and future experiments in ship design.
“NOMARS focuses on more than just the ship. Understanding how unmanned vehicles can be optimally designed for cost-effective scalable service is an important part of the design being studied. Upon completion of this program, NOMARS is expected to significantly improve our knowledge and understanding of how to build a large number of affordable and reliable unmanned warships. This, along with information on how to effectively maintain and operate the fleets of such ships, will open up new opportunities for the US Navy. “.
