Once a dwarf galaxy crashed into the Milky Way, and it remained there
Astronomers have found evidence that about three billion years ago, our Milky Way galaxy experienced a hard radial collision with an unknown dwarf galaxy. Gravity tore the baby apart and her stars became ours. But astrophysicists were able to calculate the aliens and the time of the occurrence of this space accident.
In our galaxy, anomalous star clusters and multidirectional trajectories of their motion were identified 20 years ago in the constellation Virgo. These areas are called Virgo Superdensity. Since the stars in these regions did not move consistently, and sometimes in opposite directions, it was suggested that these are the remnants of a once dwarf galaxy that drove into the side of the Milky Way and was torn apart by gravitational forces.
It is this scenario that the calculations and recent observations prove, as a group of astrophysicists from the USA and Canada reported in The Astrophysical Journal. The dwarf galaxy flew into the Milky Way, passed through its core, was torn apart along the way, and its remnants were again repeatedly attracted by the core, making fading oscillatory movements around the center of our galaxy. Judging by the residual amplitude, the collision occurred 2.7 billion years ago.
“Irregular” clusters in our galaxy gave themselves away by shells of gas and dust around them, which allowed astronomers to identify such formations and study in detail the motion of stars in these clusters. The shape of the shells of the clusters is curved in such a way, which indicates the place where the dwarf galaxy began to tear apart. This allowed us to see the whole picture and understand why some stars in such clusters are moving away from us, while others are approaching us.

The study of such “road accidents” on a cosmic scale will allow a better understanding of the processes of formation of galaxies and other cosmic phenomena. Our Milky Way galaxy has already entered a collision with another universal object – the Andromeda galaxy.
