Qualcomm loses contract to supply antenna module for iPhone 12 to a Chinese company
Disassembly of the iPhone 12 by iFixit revealed, among other things, that the device has three antenna modules for operation in the millimeter wave (mmWave), created by USI. This is a Shanghai design and manufacturing company, and it is the first time it is fulfilling such a large contract. Strikingly, Apple ditched Qualcomm’s supply of this component even though it used the rest of the Qualcomm X55 5G modem RF system.
To understand the significance of this victory, it should be mentioned that all smartphones shipped to the USA and supported 5G mmWave, without exception, have used the corresponding antennas from Qualcomm. The American company is the world leader in 5G mmWave solutions, so the loss of the contract is further evidence that leadership is not unconditional. There were many rumors that Apple would develop its own antenna, but most believed it was a component for the sub-6GHz 5G frequency band. Instead, Apple uses a Qualcomm SDR865 transceiver and subsystem.
Many might think that this is a classic measure to diversify Apple’s suppliers and cut costs, but Qualcomm is losing precisely because of technical weaknesses. Qualcomm’s most advanced mmWave antenna module is the 2nd generation QTM525. This module is less than 8mm thick. The thinnest device that comes with an X55 modem and QTM525 antennas is the Galaxy S20 + at 7.8mm thick. The thickness of the new iPhone is 7.4 mm. Qualcomm’s next-gen QTM535 is thin enough, but is part of the 2021 X60 platform. Apple’s pursuit of a minimum thickness required the development of a custom mmWave antenna.
“While the industry has leading technology providers with advanced mmWave modules that offer standard miniature antenna modules, large smartphone or mobile device manufacturers still prefer to build their miniature antenna modules and develop their own designs and functions. As such, they need to work with module suppliers with strong R&D and test capabilities as well as extensive laboratory equipment, ”reads USI’s 5G mmWave lab launch.
Test measurement chamber for 5G antennas mmWave, USI
In other words, the corresponding antenna is almost certainly an Apple exclusive, created in close collaboration between USI and the Cupertino giant. Will other mobile device manufacturers start using proprietary mmWave antennas instead of Qualcomm’s integrated solution?? And how much will this affect the average cost of the 5G platform supplied by the company?? These questions are probably already being asked by Qualcomm investors.
