Sony has announced its own consumer drones under the Airpeak brand
Sony today announced a project called Airpeak, which will create drones for the consumer market. Obviously, the Japanese manufacturer intends to compete for market share with the likes of DJI, Parrot and Skydio.
An accompanying press release says the project will help “support the creativity of video creators to the greatest extent possible.”. Sony’s decision to enter the consumer drone market cannot be considered ill-considered, as the Japanese company has extensive experience in compact and full-frame mirrorless cameras. Probably, the drones created as part of the Airpeak project will be able to attract the attention of bloggers, independent filmmakers and other users who already have experience with Sony equipment.
In a press release, Sony notes that the use of drones has led to “improved workflow efficiency and energy savings in the industrial sector.”. It also reveals that Sony created the Airpeak brand to reflect its commitment to furthering the drone business with its imaging technologies as well as 3R (Reality, Real-time and Remote) technologies.
It’s worth noting that penetrating the drone market is currently a daunting task that Sony will somehow have to tackle. In 2021, the American company GoPro hoped to squeeze the Chinese DJI in the segment of consumer drones, but its Karma quadrocopter, created by it, failed from a commercial point of view. However, the situation is somewhat different now, as DJI is at a disadvantage due to the growing hostility of the US government towards Chinese tech companies. Against this background, Sony products may receive approval from the US authorities, making it easier for the manufacturer to develop its new business in Western countries.
