Holography is considered the most natural transmission of stereoscopic images for human perception. When viewing a hologram, the human eye perceives the depth of the scene and objects, taking into account his native binocular vision with the ability to focus his gaze on what he wants. Also, this picture fits into the ability to observe the parallax of movement (different speeds of near and far objects), which is necessary to view a holographic video. Most 3D technologies are only capable of providing some of these capabilities and may require special glasses.
But holography has a serious barrier – the larger the display diagonal, the smaller the viewing angle. So, if a holographic display with a Full HD resolution with sides of 2 × 1 mm has a viewing angle of 30 °, then a display with sides of 200 × 100 mm narrows the viewing angle to 0.3 °. Samsung has overcome this limitation with the S-BLU controllable backlight. Thanks to S-BLU and a number of other innovations, Samsung’s 10-inch holographic display prototype can be viewed from one meter at a 15 ° viewing angle, which is 30 times greater than conventional approach. In addition, the holographic display turned out to be relatively thin – only one centimeter thick.

The S-BLU illumination unit is a “thin” coherent light source C-BLU in the form of a plate. A coherent beam from LED lasers is incident on the C-BLU plate, which the plate converts into collimated (parallel) beams. Parallel beams of coherent illumination pass through a deflector (another plate), which deflects the incident beams at the desired angle. It is the deflector that repeatedly expands the viewing angles without the need to increase the number of pixels. A relatively thin geometric lens forms the image, which made it possible to reduce the thickness of the composite holographic display to one cm.

The developers have managed to significantly reduce the amount of processed holographic data, which is not just a lot, but a critically large amount. For example, instead of a series of calculations, the data for forming the image is taken from ready-made tables, which reduces the intensity of calculations. Also, instead of a “point cloud” in the process of processing the hologram, the researchers used the method of calculating “slices”.
