Ford now considers it advisable to self-produce traction batteries

Classic car makers often enter into alliances with traction battery suppliers when trying to adapt to EV production, as this is the most critical and scarce component of a new type of power plant. The new head of Ford said this week that the American auto giant will master the independent production of batteries.

A similar statement, as noted by Reuters, was made by the newly minted CEO of Ford Motor Co, Jim Farley (Jim Farley), who took office only on October 1 this year. This position is at odds with the point of view of his predecessor Jim Hackett, who said in the summer that Ford would not be able to produce traction batteries on its own.

At the Reuters Automotive Summit teleconference, incumbent Ford CEO Jim Farley admitted that the company is in discussions about self-manufacturing battery cells. In his opinion, this is quite natural given the growth in the production of electric vehicles. The development of the industry is now difficult to imagine without close cooperation of manufacturers of batteries and electric vehicles. Panasonic, for example, is both a supplier to Tesla and Toyota, and recently formed a joint venture with a Japanese automaker. Tesla, according to knowledgeable sources, is considering buying a stake in LG Energy Solutions, a newly formed company that will inherit LG Chem’s traction battery production capacity.

An example of industrial cooperation is the upcoming deal between Nikola and General Motors – the latter is expected to provide the young developer of electric freight transport not only with the capacity to assemble pickups, but also power elements and related technologies. Major automakers have already begun to form ambitious plans for the production of electric vehicles. GM and Hyundai Motor expect to produce 1 million EVs annually by 2025, and Volkswagen plans to triple those volumes. Elon Musk recently announced that Tesla will be able to produce 20 million electric vehicles a year by 2027 – this will allow it to take two-thirds of the market.
