Microsoft has agreed with Intel, AMD and Qualcomm to build its own security chip in future computers

Microsoft unveils hardware solution to protect future Windows computers. This is the Microsoft Pluton system, which integrates into processors and is a replacement for the currently used Trusted Platform Module (TPM) for security, which is located separately from the processor.

Over the past two years, some of the largest chip makers have faced issues related to hardware vulnerabilities in their chips, such as Meltdown and Specter. Despite the fact that the developers fixed the dangerous vulnerabilities, they had to rethink the approach to securing the microcircuits.

Now, the new Pluton security coprocessor has been presented, which is the brainchild of a partnership between Microsoft, AMD, Intel and Qualcomm and will be built into the processors of the last three. According to available data, the new Microsoft security system reliably protects devices from hacking both in the event of physical access of an attacker to the attacked system, and during campaigns based on the exploitation of various vulnerabilities. The developers say that the integration of the system into future Intel, AMD and Qualcomm processors will make life much more difficult for hackers who are targeting the use of vulnerabilities to extract encryption keys, credentials and other confidential information from attacked Windows systems.

Computers using the Pluton architecture will initially emulate TPM to ensure compatibility with existing TPM specifications and APIs. This approach will enable users to immediately start taking advantage of the enhanced security of Windows features that are based on TPM. Pluton devices running Windows will use a security coprocessor to protect credentials, user IDs, encryption keys, and other sensitive information.

Microsoft announced that Pluton first appeared on Xbox One in 2021, which made it much more difficult to hack the console. By the way, it can complicate the lives of PC pirates. Later, the security chip was used in the Microsoft Azure Sphere cloud service to protect Internet of Things (IoT) devices. Now the idea is to use this same technology with some improvements in new devices based on Windows 10.

Microsoft, AMD, Intel and Qualcomm joint efforts also indicate that updates for Pluton will be delivered along with regular patches for the Windows platform. In addition, this should ensure the maximum distribution of Pluton in a large number of new systems.

“We believe that embedded security processors like Pluton are the future of computing. With Pluton, we aim to provide a more secure foundation for smart edge devices and smart cloud by extending this default trust level to objects around the world, ”Microsoft said in a statement.
