Samsung plans to master the production of 3nm products at the same time as TSMC

At a private event last month, Samsung Foundry officials said the South Korean manufacturer is going to start mass production of 3nm products in 2022, thereby ensuring synchronization with its main competitor TSMC. Preparations for achieving this goal are already in full swing.

Bloomberg reported that Samsung Electronics will allocate $ 116 billion for the development of advanced lithographic processes, the company’s core division is tasked with eliminating the lag behind TSMC in the pace of transition to new stages of lithography. Taiwanese competitor has repeatedly announced that it will begin mass shipments of 3nm products in the second half of 2022.

There are key differences in the approaches to mastering 3nm technology of both companies. While TSMC expects to preserve the structure of the transistor within the framework of the so-called FinFET arrangement, then Samsung relies on a ring gate (GAA, Gate-All-Around). From the point of view of the Korean manufacturer, this will provide him with a technological advantage over a competitor, which will master the GAA layout not earlier than the transition to 2-nm standards. The main thing is that no significant problems arise on the way of mastering the new technology that would jeopardize the entire initiative.

In 2021, TSMC controlled more than half of the $ 250 billion semiconductor contract manufacturing market, according to TrendForce. The Korean company Samsung was content with 18% of this market, but it clearly does not suit it. TSMC’s capital expenditures this year may reach a record $ 17 billion, and Samsung plans to spend $ 26 billion, but in the latter case, not all of the amount will be used to develop a business for contract manufacturing of chips.

Limited expansion of TSMC’s production facilities with outstripping demand growth allows Samsung to attract new customers. According to Bloomberg News, Samsung has already managed to receive so many orders for the release of 5nm products that they would have been enough for several years of continuous operation. The number of customers in the contract business of Samsung last year grew by 30%, according to an anonymous representative of the company. While Samsung is trying to increase production capacity ahead of demand in order to have room for maneuver. In this case, Samsung’s ability to obtain ASML lithographic scanners in sufficient quantities is of particular importance, since TSMC, as their largest consumer, has the opportunity to lobby its interests to the detriment of other market players.
