Apple M1 tested in Cinebench R23: performance similar to six-core Comet Lake
17.eleven.2021 [12:06],
Andrey Sozinov

Apple last week unveiled its first proprietary computer processor, the M1, based on ARM architecture. The company said that the new product is several times superior to Intel processors used in previous generations of its computers. The first performance tests showed that the new product is even more powerful than the desktop flagships of Intel and AMD, but ideas about the Apple M1 should be corrected – the results of tests of the new chip in Cinebench R23 have appeared.

To begin with, recall that the Apple M1 processor has eight cores, divided into two clusters: four powerful Firestorm cores and four energy efficient Icestorm cores. The integrated GPU has eight cores with 128 execution units. The frequencies for the CPU and GPU are not specified, but it is known that in the MacBook Air they are lower than in the MacBook Pro 13 and Mac mini. All because of the difference in cooling systems.

Until now, the Apple M1 has been compared with Intel and AMD processors exclusively in tests initially sharpened for mobile chips and ARM architecture: Geekbench, GFXBench, etc.d. Therefore, testing in Cinebench R23 demonstrates a picture closer to real “computer” conditions. At the same time, it is very important to note that the code of the new Cinebench R23 is also adapted for the new Apple chip, that is, this benchmark is launched on the M1 in native mode, and not through the emulator.

One of the Twitter users posted a photo with the results of testing the MacBook Pro 13 on the eight-core Apple M1. Operating at a frequency of up to 3.1 GHz in a single-threaded test, the chip scored 1498 points, and in a multi-threaded test – 7508 points. For comparison, the mobile quad-core eight-thread Intel Core i7-1185G7 (up to 4.8 GHz) in the single-core test shows a comparable 1538 points, but loses in multi-threaded performance – 6264 points. But the eight-core and 16-thread AMD Ryzen 7 4800U (up to 4.2 GHz) in single- and multi-threaded tests Cinebench R23 is gaining 1235 and 10 156 points, respectively.

In previous tests, the Apple M1 was also compared with desktop flagships, so let’s do the same. The ten-core Intel Core i9-10900K (up to 5.3 GHz) demonstrates 1418 and 17 325 points in Cinebench R23 tests, respectively. In turn, the 12-core desktop Ryzen 9 5900X (up to 4.8 GHz) in the same tests is gaining 1622 and 21,878 points, respectively.

If we evaluate the result of the Apple M1 at a qualitative level, then its multi-threaded performance according to Cinebench R23 data is comparable to the performance of a six-core mobile 45-W Comet Lake processor (Core i7-10850H), while in terms of single-threaded performance it can be compared to the Tiger family. Lake. It turns out, despite the much lower frequency, the Apple processor can provide a very high level of performance in single-threaded tasks, and also copes quite well with loads that use all cores. In addition, we recall that Apple declares very low power consumption for its product.

Besides Cinebench, Apple’s new M1 processor has been tested in the built-in benchmark of the semi-professional photo editor Affinity Photo, Hexus reports. Here we tested how the CPU and integrated GPU of Apple’s new chip handle raster and vector graphics. And they coped perfectly well, confidently outperforming the iMac on the six-core Intel Core i5-9600K and with the AMD Radeon Pro 580X video card. The credit for this lies with the integrated graphics, which in the M1 turned out to be much faster than the discrete graphics from AMD, albeit the generation before last.
