Almost a third of old Tesla Model S and X models fail displays due to small amount of internal memory. Hundreds of thousands of cars can be recalled
17.eleven.2021 [17:49],
Gennady Detinich

Tesla’s attempt to hush up flash memory failures in the extended warranty infotainment control unit does not appear to help prevent recalls of hundreds of thousands of cars. Today there was information from the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) that more than 30% of Tesla cars assembled in certain months had display failures. This is a serious reason for withdrawal.

NHTSA is currently expanding its investigation into cases of failure or other display issues in Tesla Model S and X electric vehicle control systems. The root of all evil lies in the MCU, which until 20221 was installed only 4 or 8 GB of flash memory. This volume was quickly worn out by the increased load in the form of logs and other intermediate data, which led to the failure of the display and the inability to control the systems of the electric vehicle, although it did not affect the management of the engine and brakes. Nonetheless, NHTSA considers display failures to be cause for serious concern about the safety of driving an electric vehicle.

The agency’s research covers 159 thousand. Tesla Model S / X electric vehicles manufactured before 20221, after which the amount of flash memory in the MCU was increased to 64 GB. In response to a request filed, as reported by NHTSA the other day, the agency was informed of 2,399 complaints and incident reports, 7,777 warranty claims and 4,746 non-warranty claims related to MCU replacement. Data showed that in Tesla cars in certain months of assembly, the frequency of certain failures of displays (MCUs) exceeded 30%. Almost every third electric car was found to be defective, and after 3-4 years of operation, the trend accelerated.

Last week, Tesla tried to globally settle the problem by offering monetary compensation or extended warranty to replace MCUs for those whose electric car is not more than eight years old and has not yet driven 100 thousand. miles (160 thousand. km). This caused the displeasure of those who do not fall under these conditions and blame Tesla for the malfunction. The NHTSA agency may well side with such owners of the company’s electric cars, but the final decision has not yet been made.
