Major diesel engine manufacturer plans to produce hydrogen from water
Major automakers are starting to rebuild their businesses to focus on the production of electric vehicles, since in some countries the sale of new cars with internal combustion engines will be banned in the next decade. Manufacturers of power plants are not lagging behind – Cummins, for example, relies on the production of plants for the production of hydrogen from water by electrolysis.

Hydrogen is not only the most abundant element in the universe. Its use as a vehicle fuel does not emit greenhouse gases, unlike fossil hydrocarbon fuels. As noted by Barron’s, the renowned diesel engine manufacturer Cummins at an industry event outlined the main theses of its program for the transition to hydrogen fuel.
The storage and logistics costs of hydrogen are quite high, as this requires special vessels that can withstand very high pressures. For this reason, Cummins offers to produce hydrogen by electrolysis directly in places of active consumption. In fact, stored electricity from renewable sources can be used for electrolysis of water in order to generate hydrogen and its further consumption by vehicles.
As noted by Cummins, now one megawatt of electrolytic capacity is worth approximately $ 1 million, by 2025 this amount will decrease to $ 750,000. An electrolytic plant with a capacity of 1 megawatt is capable of producing up to 400 kg of hydrogen fuel daily. This capacity is enough to provide one long-haul tractor with fuel for movement for several days – provided that the daily mileage does not exceed 800-1000 km.
Modern economy will need thousands of megawatts of hydrogen production capacity. Cummins estimates potential revenue from the sale of electrolytic plants at hundreds of millions of dollars per year. In terms of the business of this company, the amount is not very large, because next year it will help out about $ 21 billion, but the vector is set quite clearly. In addition to the production of units for the extraction of hydrogen from water, Cummins is going to develop the production of fuel hydrogen cells. They allow electricity to be generated in hydrogen-fueled cells.
Cummins estimates that one kilogram of hydrogen fuel will cost between $ 3 and $ 6 to produce, the US company Nikola previously mentioned a comparable price of $ 4 per kilogram. At this price level, hydrogen can already compete with diesel fuel in terms of economic feasibility of using. True, in order to develop the necessary infrastructure, you will have to spend not only billions of dollars, but also several years.
