A group of British and Chinese scientists invented lead-free perovskite to power electronics from indoor light sources
The abundance of personal electronics and the proliferation of the Internet of Things raise the issue of powering devices from indoor lighting. Traditional solar panels are poorly suited for this task, as they are focused on a different range of radiation and different intensities. But there are materials that promise sufficient conversion efficiency to collect significant amounts of energy, the most promising of which is perovskite.
Researchers at the University of Cambridge, Imperial College London and Suzhou University in China have discovered that new “green” materials currently being developed for next-generation solar panels could be useful for indoor light harvesting.
“By effectively absorbing the light emanating from lamps commonly found in homes and buildings, the materials can convert light into electricity with the efficiency already available in a range of commercial technologies,” said project co-author Dr. Robert Hoye of Imperial College London. “We’ve also already identified several potential improvements that will allow these materials to surpass current indoor PV technology in the near future.”.
Scientists mean by promising material perovskite-like complex compounds. Traditionally, lead-doped perovskite is used to make solar panels, but for indoor use, researchers are looking for sustainable options. In particular, British scientists with their colleagues from China have proposed perovskite-like compounds with bismuth and antimony. It was found that such materials are much more efficient at absorbing light indoors, and their efficiency is promising for commercial applications.
British scientists reported their discovery in an article in Advanced Energy Materials. We add that a group of Russian scientists conducted the same study three years ago, during which the perovskite-like complex antimony bromide ASbBr6 was discovered, solar panels on which showed a record light conversion efficiency for antimony and bismuth halides.
