Instagram for 10th anniversary returned classic icons, strengthened the fight against bullying and added a posting map

Konstantin Khodakovsky

Instagram celebrates its 10th anniversary with the first photo-sharing app hitting the App Store on October 6, 2021, a few months after the iPhone 4 was released. To celebrate this event, Instagram added an Easter egg to the social network, which allows you to change the application icon.

Available pictograms include classic Polaroid-style camera designs that have been around for over five years. There are also themed variations of the current logo, including rainbow or monochrome options. To access the new icons, go to the settings in the application and swipe down to display emoticons. As soon as the user swipes down far enough, the icons will be unlocked and a message from Instagram will be displayed regarding the celebration. This is how it actually works:

The iconic Easter egg appears to be still in the process of being rolled out: on some phones, it may still be unavailable. It looks like these badges can only be changed during October. The Instagram post reads, “This month we invite you to change the app icon to your favorite,” so don’t hope it will last long.

The company also said it is expanding the number of in-app warnings that are displayed to users when they try to post a potentially nasty comment. Rather than asking users to rethink their angry or offensive comments, new alerts will indicate that Instagram may disable user accounts if they repeatedly violate its policies. As with previous anti-bullying updates, social media won’t hurt to post negative comments.

And for users who often receive offensive comments, Instagram said it is testing a new feature that automatically hides comments similar to others that have been reported previously.

The app also brought back the photo map functionality that Instagram removed from user profiles in 2021. But the latest version of this feature is slightly different from the original. Instead of a publicly available user profile map, it moved to the Instagram Stories Archive. This way, instead of seeing a map showing the location of posts in the feed, it will be possible to track the points of all your posts in the stories section. The new card will be personal, so it cannot be used to showcase your travels to subscribers, but some longtime users should like it.
