UK calls on Amazon, Apple and others to help tackle tons of e-waste

The UK lags far behind other countries in terms of recycling e-waste, according to a published report by the Environmental Audit Committee (EAC) of the House of Commons of the United Kingdom Parliament. Committee members invited large tech companies like Amazon and Apple to help dispose of waste using their technologies and methods.

The UK generates 23.9 kg of e-waste per person per year. The country has the second largest e-waste per capita in the world, behind only Norway, according to a recent UN report.

Most of this waste is incinerated or sent to landfills, and about 40% is sent to other countries, often illegally. “Countries that accept our e-waste are often dumped in landfills, with toxic chemicals entering the environment and causing harm to people,” writes EAC.

The report notes that online retailers such as Amazon and eBay are not always categorized as retailers or manufacturers by regulators, as many products are sold on their platform by third-party retailers – about 50% of products in Amazon’s case. Therefore, they are not required under UK law to participate in the collection and recycling of electronic waste. The committee urged such companies to “collect products and pay for their recycling on a par with retailers and manufacturers who do not trade on their platforms.”.

Apple responded by telling the Guardian that the EAC report does not reflect its efforts to conserve resources. For example, the company’s smartwatches, iPads and iPhones use recycled material in key components.

“Amazon is committed to minimizing waste and helping our customers reuse, repair and recycle their products, and we offer a range of options that anyone can easily access through the Amazon Second Chance website,” commented an Amazon spokesman. adding that the internet company has been involved in the recycling of over 10,000 tonnes of e-waste in the UK over the past decade.
