China begins preparations for landing the Chang’e-5 spacecraft on the lunar surface. “The Chang’e-5 flight control team on November 30, in accordance with the plan, successfully separated the block of the landing and take-off modules from the orbital module complex and the reentry vehicle,” the message says.

It is expected that while the orbital complex will be in lunar orbit at an altitude of about 200 km from the satellite surface. The Chang’e-5 vehicle with a total weight of 8.2 tons consists of an orbital, reentry, landing and take-off module, as well as a descent vehicle. The latter, together with the landing and take-off module, is planned to land at the Rumker Peak in the Ocean of Storms on the visible side of the Moon.

The Chang’e-5 descent module is equipped with a drilling device and a manipulator with a bucket, with the help of which it will have to collect 2 kilograms of lunar regolith. The collected soil samples will be loaded into a special container for the take-off vehicle, which will subsequently rise from the lunar surface and dock with the orbital module. After that, the container with soil on board the take-off module will be reloaded into the return vehicle. The latter is planned to return to Earth on December 16 or 17 in the area of ​​Khoshun Siziwan in the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region.

It is noted that the operation of automatic soil sampling on another celestial body will be carried out for the first time in the history of space exploration of the PRC. In addition, this is the first mission to collect soil from the lunar surface in 44 years. If successful, China will become the third country after the USA and the USSR, which managed to carry out such a mission.
