Elon Musk is already testing space lasers. We need them to improve Starlink satellite Internet
High-speed Internet connection is not as common as we would like, especially in rural areas, where sometimes there are not even slow Internet access options. Elon Musk and his SpaceX engineering team hope to change that with Starlink, the promising satellite Internet. Engineers recently answered some community questions through a Reddit AMA Question Session.
SpaceX has already launched hundreds of satellites into low-earth orbit, and has begun to provide Internet services available in the northern United States and southern Canada in test mode. Early tests showed speeds of the order of 150 Mbps for downloads and 15 Mbps for uploads. Obviously, this is worse than good fiber-optic broadband, but still faster than most people on our planet, especially in rural areas and underdeveloped countries. One of the burning questions concerns traffic restrictions. Provider Comcast criticized for imposing 1.2 TB / month data transfer limits for millions of northeastern US customers. Will Starlink impose similar traffic limits – and if so, which ones?? The good news is that there is no such limitation in Starlink beta testing at this time. SpaceX would like to keep the same approach in the future, but does not say that the possibility of restricting traffic is completely ruled out.
“All in all, we really don’t want to put nasty limits on the amount of data that people have come across in the past while using satellite Internet. Now we are still trying to figure out a lot – we may have to take some measures in the future to prevent abuse and just make sure everyone else gets quality services, “said a SpaceX engineer.
Another problem is the delays associated with the transfer of data from space and back. However, SpaceX is confident that this will not be a problem thanks to space lasers. “The speed of light in a vacuum is higher than in optical fiber, so space lasers have exciting potential for low-delay channels. They will also allow us to serve users where satellites cannot see the gateway’s ground antenna – for example, over the ocean and in regions poorly covered by fiber optic lines, ”SpaceX said.
The SpaceX engineer also said that earlier this year, the team conducted exciting tests using prototype space lasers on two Starlink satellites. They made it possible to transfer gigabytes of data per second. The challenge, however, is to keep the cost of space lasers down and to produce them in large quantities and still do it quickly.
Another interesting question is related to mobility. One of the users asked if he would be able to take equipment with him in the future when traveling to a country house outside the city or on vacation.
“Mobility options, including relocating Starlink to other service addresses (or to places where there are no addresses at all), will appear as soon as we can expand coverage by launching more satellites and deploying new hardware and software,” the engineer said. Spacex.
Overall, it looks like SpaceX is doing well with the Starlink project. This is probably great news for everyone who lives far from good Internet access.
