Green hydrogen will replace natural gas in 300 homes in Scotland
The UK authorities continue to carry out large-scale experiments to transfer life and economy on a “green” track. One such experiment is being prepared in Scotland. About 300 homes will be converted to heating, hot water and cooking using ecologically produced hydrogen instead of natural gas. It is argued that today there are no analogues to this experience anywhere in the world.

According to the project, about 300 homes in Fife County, Scotland will be equipped with hydrogen fuel boilers, boilers and kitchen utensils free of charge. Household conversion to clean fuels to be completed by the end of 2022. There will be no hydrogen charges.
The experiment will continue for about four years and must either prove the correctness of the conversion of heating to hydrogen, or refute it. Success in this first phase will allow hydrogen energy trials to be expanded to 1,000 or more households. In the UK, 85% of households use gas boilers for heating, so this type of equipment leaves a significant imprint on the carbon footprint of the island.
We emphasize that in the experience in Scotland, hydrogen produced by renewable energy will be used. This is the so-called green hydrogen. Hydrogen extracted with the help of coal and natural gas is called gray, and with the help of electricity from nuclear power plants, it is called blue.
UK electricity and gas regulator Ofgem will provide SGN with £ 18m ($ 24m) for the Fife experiment. The Scottish Government will support the project with a grant of 6.9 million pounds sterling ($ 9.2 million). Another £ 12.7 million ($ 16.9 million) grant will be awarded to National Grid to verify the safe transport of hydrogen gas through old gas distribution networks across the country. Funding is also provided for a number of other innovative projects, for example, to improve the transmission capacity of power lines, substations and improve mechanisms for the distribution of electricity.
