AI taught to turn ancient maps into a kind of satellite images
sixteen.10.2021 [20:26],
Gennady Detinich

Ancient maps without reference to the modern landscape can only help the sophisticated explorer. But there are not so many of them, while images of cities and objects on maps of past centuries can give food for the mind to scientists of many specialties, and not just geographers and historians. For example, this is a heap of valuable data for studying the issues of urbanization, the development of society, ecology and other areas of knowledge about man and civilization. So what to do?

The idea of how to make ancient maps understandable to a wide circle of the uninitiated came to the mind of one of the students of a higher institution in the Brazilian city of Recife. He and his professor proposed a technique for converting digitized images of ancient maps into images resembling satellite images, with which you are probably all familiar from the map services Google, Yandex or others.

For example, the image above shows a digital image of the vicinity of Recife, taken in 1808, and on the right, the same map is presented in the image of a “satellite image” that was created by Pix2pix neural networks after a cycle of training and processing an array of input data.

In the images below, you can compare the image obtained by the algorithm with a modern satellite image of the same area (right picture). The resulting AI image on the map lacks detail, which the authors of the study agree with, and what they plan to deal with further.

“When you look at the images, you get a better understanding of how the city has changed in 200 years,” explains Andrade, the student who came up with the idea. – The geography of the city has changed dramatically – landfills have reduced the number of reservoirs, and green areas have been removed as a result of human activities “.

That anthropologists and historians will be able to replenish their analytical apparatus with new tools. But how to convey to big and small people the idea that it is easy to dirty the environment, but it is almost impossible to return it to its original purity?? Can visually show how it was and how it became, using ancient city maps and modern machine learning algorithms? Even so.
