Winter and cold have come, which will require a sharp increase in heating costs for houses and apartments. And it would be great to stock up free heat in the summer and not even always pleasant heat in order to properly dispose of the accumulated. Unfortunately, today underground storage pools with water remain the most effective, but very complex and large-scale solution, but they are very expensive and therefore not widespread. British scientists decided to turn to innovative materials.

In search of the most efficient storage of light or heat energy for subsequent long-term consumption in cold months, British scientists from Lancaster University conducted a series of encouraging experiments with so-called organometallic framework materials (MOF). MOF materials are characterized by high porosity, which means they have an extremely large interior surface and the highest absorption capacity.

In their new study, scientists tested how well MOF materials, in particular – DMOF1, can store energy. An experiment with azobenzene was carried out as an energy storage device. This compound, under the influence of ordinary ultraviolet radiation, changes its molecular shape – as if bending into a spring. In this state, azobenzene is absorbed by the pores of the organometallic frame material and in such a compressed state can be there for years (the experiment confirmed the storage of the molecule without change for four months).

A slight “trigger” heating of the material makes the azobenzene molecules pass into a second and straightened stable state, which is accompanied by a significant release of heat, higher than the “trigger”. The researchers note that the materials and compounds studied in the experiment have a low heat storage density, so they cannot be used commercially. But if you look for the necessary connections for a long time and persistently, then you can create a heat accumulator that will change a lot in approaches to the implementation of heating systems for buildings.
