The Gaia telescope has created the most detailed map of the Milky Way with almost 2 billion stars in 7 years
According to the press service of the Royal Astronomical Society of Great Britain, in 7 years of operation, the Gaia orbiting telescope was able to create the most detailed map of the Milky Way, which marked the exact position of almost two billion stars. The data obtained make it possible to determine the brightness, color, temperature of stars, their trajectories and distance from the Sun, as well as to carry out spectral analysis to determine the chemical composition of objects.
“The new Gaia data promises to be a treasure trove for astronomers,” said Jos de Bruijne, who works at the European Space Agency for astrometry, dynamic modeling of galaxies and young stellar groups.
The Global Astrometric Interferometer for Astrophysics telescope (Gaia) was launched in December 2021 using the Russian Soyuz STB launch vehicle, after which it covered a distance of 1.5 million km and reached the designated Lagrange point L2, where the attraction The Earths and the Suns balance each other for a long and unobstructed view of the sky. In 2021, the largest CCD sensor at that time was assembled for this probe, consisting of 106 matrices of 4.7 × 6 cm each. Gaia continuously scans the sky, evaluating the parallax effect – the change in the apparent position of objects in relation to the distant background, taking into account the location of the observatory.
Over the past years, within the framework of the Gaia project, two catalogs with updated coordinates of 1.6 billion objects of the Milky Way have already been published, as well as maps of the immediate vicinity of the solar system have been prepared. Now Floor Van Leeuwen and colleagues at the University of Cambridge have prepared an early version of the third edition of the catalog, which includes almost 2 billion stars. About 300 thousand of them are located in the immediate vicinity of the solar system (100 times more than was known in 1991 and about 92% of the estimated real number), that is, within 326 light years from Earth.
Scientists have already learned how the appearance of the night sky will change in the next 1.6 million years, having estimated the movements of 40 thousand of the most visible stars to us, and also calculated the speed of the Sun’s movement around the center of our Galaxy. As it turned out, the orbit of the solar system is slightly elongated, and its speed really increases by 7 mm / s per year. In other words, in the next 12 months, all of us together will cover a distance of 220 km more than last year – but this is slightly less than the Sun flies by in one second – 230 km.
“Gaia has been staring at the skies for the past seven years, mapping the position and speed of the stars. Thanks to telescopes, today we have the most detailed 3D atlas ever created with a billion stars, ”said Caroline Harper, head of the UK Space Agency.
In addition to the objects of the Milky Way and its two largest satellites, the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds, the Gaia team obtained coordinates and calculated the sizes and temperatures for several tens of thousands of asteroids and comets. These data will make it possible to more accurately assess the danger of collision of small celestial bodies with the Earth, and can also shed light on the history of the evolution of the Earth and other worlds of the solar system.

The complete 3rd catalog will be released at the end of 2022, during which time the scientists hope to collect additional data using Gaia and double the measurement accuracy. The possibility of extending the service life of the European Space Agency observatory until 2025 is also being considered, if the fuel reserves and the state of the system allow it.
