Google responded to accusations of monopoly: everyone uses our search engine because they want to, not because they have to
21.10.2021 [20:58],
Arthur Khamzin

Google publishes open letter in response to US Department of Justice antitrust lawsuit. The company denied the allegations and said that users choose their search engine of their own free will, and not because of the lack of analogues.

Google

The corporation claims that the Justice Department’s lawsuit can only harm consumers, because Google engineers are constantly working to improve search. In their opinion, the requirements of the authorities are based on controversial arguments, and their implementation may lead to a decrease in the quality of services and an increase in prices for smartphones.

“Like other businesses, we pay to promote our services. This is the same when grain producers pay extra to the supermarket to place their goods at the level of the shopper’s eyes, instead of a corner on the shelf. As for digital services, the purchased devices also have peculiar shelves. For mobile devices, this shelf is controlled by Apple, as well as companies such as AT&T, Verizon, Samsung and LG. Desktop PCs are controlled by Microsoft. We are in talks with many companies, but let’s be clear – our competitors are easily available if you want to use their service, ”says Google.

As an example, the company indicated that users can easily change their search engine in a few steps. In addition, the search engine change is also available in the Google Chrome browser. The developer also noted that Edge browser with Bing search engine is preinstalled on Windows devices.

For Android devices, Google has signed advertising agreements with device manufacturers. The contracts involve not only the distribution of the company’s services, but also the free use of Android. According to them, this helps to reduce the cost of devices. In addition, users often download third-party browsers through the app store.

Google noted that one of the key allegations in the Justice Department’s suit is the lack of experience of Americans in using services. The company rejected the claim, explaining that over 204 billion apps were downloaded in 2021. Many are not preinstalled on Android – Instagram, Spotify, Snapchat and more.

“We understand that success attracts close attention, but we stand our ground. Antitrust law is about fostering innovation and helping consumers, not changing the rules of the game in favor of specific competitors or making it difficult for people to access the services they want. We are confident that the court will decide that this claim does not correspond to the facts, ”the letter says.

US Department of Justice sues Google on October 20. The agency claims that the company used its dominant market position to distribute its products. The ministry believes that one of the tools is the Android operating system, which obliges manufacturers to pre-install Google services.
