China’s SMIC launches trial production of 8nm N + 1 chips

Shanghai Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corp (SMIC) has announced the start of small-scale trial production using its own second generation N + 1 FinFET process. The company representatives said this in response to an investor’s question about the progress made by the company in the research, development and production of 7nm products.

SMIC is the first in China to master 14nm mass production in the last quarter of 2021. It was the first generation FinFET process. The Hisilicon Kirin 710A single-chip system, which was used in the Honor Play 4T and a couple of other Huawei products, is manufactured in compliance with these standards.

Back in September this year, when investors were asked to talk about the mass production of new generations of microcircuits, SMIC replied that potential customers are already familiar with the second generation N + 1 FinFET process. The company then also hinted that small-scale trial production is expected to be launched by the end of 2021. Later in October, the Chinese company INNOSILICON announced that it had reached the tape out stage of the world’s first chip to be manufactured with SMIC N + 1 FinFET compliance. Now, as you can see, small-scale production has already begun.

Regarding the N + 1 process itself, SMIC CEO Liang Mengsong reported earlier this year that the process is very similar to 7nm and does not require EUV lithography. N + 1 process technology refers to 8nm or 7nm transistor geometry. It targets low power consumption chips. Compared to the 14nm process technology, the SMIC N + 1 process technology provides a performance increase of 20% or a decrease in power consumption by 57%, while the transition to a 7nm process technology gives an industry average performance gain of about 35%.

The start of printing N + 1 chips is positive news for China, but SMIC lags far behind TSMC, which has moved to 5nm process technology and is currently working on its next generation 3nm norms. In addition, the United States has put SMIC on the sanctions list, so now it will be much more difficult, if not impossible, for the company to develop.
