The popularity of batteries of this type will grow due to the relative cheapness, but it must be borne in mind that they perform worse at low temperatures.

Lithium batteries with iron phosphate cathodes (LFP) provide lower charge storage density compared to counterparts using cathodes containing cobalt, nickel and aluminum (NCA) or nickel, manganese, cobalt (NMC). On the other hand, they are cheaper to manufacture, and Tesla credits them with a longer lifespan. She is even going to use LFP batteries to create a new $ 25,000 electric car model, which she promises to bring to market within the next three years.

The popular Taiwanese publication DigiTimes reports that LFP batteries will become more popular among manufacturers of low-cost electric vehicles. In addition to Tesla, Volkswagen and Daimler are interested in them. The release of such batteries for the needs of the local market can be organized in Europe with the involvement of Chinese partners. Volkswagen also intends to organize the production of low-cost electric vehicles based on LFP-batteries in China with the possibility of exporting them to Europe.

The disadvantages of batteries of this type, according to the source, can be attributed not only to a lower charge storage density than that of NCA or NMC analogs, but also worse resistance to negative temperatures. If NCA or NMC batteries lose 15% of their charge at a certain negative temperature, then LFP batteries have two times more losses. Batteries with NCA or NMC cathodes are capable of operating at temperatures up to minus 30 degrees Celsius, and LFP versions lose their performance even at minus 20 degrees Celsius. Manufacturers of electric vehicles provide for the possibility of heating traction batteries at the expense of their own charge or when connected to the mains, but such measures predictably reduce the vehicle’s power reserve.
