European space cleaner will get huge “tentacles” to capture debris in orbit
We reported last week that the European Space Agency (ESA) signed a € 86 million contract with an industrial group led by Swiss startup ClearSpace SA to purchase a unique service: the removal of space debris from orbit. As a result, in 2025, ClearSpace will launch the first such ClearSpace-1 mission, and now details about the upcoming space cleaner have been revealed.
The mission will find, capture and remove from orbit the upper part of the Vespa payload separation system (Vega Secondary Payload Adapter) used in the European Vega launch vehicle. This object was left in orbit after Vega’s second flight in 2021.
By the way, the payment for the contract, and not the direct purchase and implementation of the entire mission by ESA was made on purpose: the EU also wants to stimulate the creation of its own commercial space sector. In addition to paying for part of the mission (ClearSpace will receive the rest of the funds from commercial investors) ESA promised to provide key technologies for flights, developed as part of the clean space agency’s initiative within the ADRIOS (Active Debris Removal / In-Orbit Servicing) program.
Technologies that ESA will share include robotic manipulators for collecting debris, advanced guidance, navigation and control systems, as well as machine vision that allows the pursuing satellite to safely and autonomously approach the target.
The complexity of the mission lies in the fact that until now, only the capture of fully controlled objects, and not freely flying debris, was carried out in space. Successful completion of the mission will be an important achievement in space exploration. Given the fact that the total number of satellites will grow rapidly over the next decade, regular cleaning of disabled objects from orbit is becoming an increasingly pressing issue in order to prevent collision cascades in orbit, which can greatly complicate the task of space launches. At orbital speeds, even a screw can turn into a dangerous projectile.
With a mass of 112 kg, a relatively simple shape, solid construction and dimensions close to a small satellite, it is an ideal target for the ClearSpace-1 mission. If successful, it will be possible to move on to larger and more complex captures in subsequent missions and, ultimately, within the framework of one mission, collect several objects at once. After completing the mission, the hunter robot together with the wreck will be released from orbit and burn up in the atmosphere.
