SpaceX launches the Dragon ship with cargo for the ISS on board
06.12.2021 [21:50],
Vladimir Fetisov

The American company SpaceX, using a Falcon 9 launch vehicle, carried out the next launch of the Dragon spacecraft, which is supposed to deliver various cargoes to the International Space Station (ISS). The launch took place from the site at Cape Canaveral at 11:17 local time (19:17 Moscow time).

SpaceX delivers cargo to the ISS for the 21st time for the American aerospace agency NASA. It is worth noting that this time, for the first time, the updated Dragon model is used, capable of carrying 20% more cargo on board compared to the previous version of the ship. In addition, the updated Dragon is capable of fully autonomous docking with the ISS.

The spacecraft must deliver about 3 tons of cargo to the orbital station, including food, household items and various equipment for research and experiments carried out on board the ISS by American astronauts. Docking of the cargo vehicle with the ISS is to take place on December 7, in the afternoon. It will take place offline using one of the new international docking adapters that have been developed specifically to automate this process. It is noteworthy that after docking to the ISS, two SpaceX ships will be moored at once, since the Dragon that delivered the astronauts in November is still at the orbital station.

The updated version of the Dragon spacecraft is a modification of the Crew Dragon spacecraft, which was used to deliver astronauts to the ISS as part of the Demo-2 missions in May and Crew-1 in November this year. The modified Dragon does not have the Super Draco engines in the design, which are installed on the crewed version of the ship and are designed to ensure a quick departure of the capsule from the Falcon 9 rocket in the event of an emergency situation during launch. It is also important that the new version of the ship can be reused up to five times, while the previous cargo version of the Dragon could be launched into space only three times. This launch also marks the 100th successful launch for the Falcon 9, with 43 of them using remanufactured and refurbished launch vehicles. We also note that SpaceX carried out the 68th successful landing of the first stage of launch vehicles.
